Destiny Brown

MEDIA EDUCATOR

Destiny Brown is a filmmaker, actress, and now teacher, born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She began at Wide Angle three and a half years ago as the lead actress for a CSX train safety video being produced, but continued to work with Wide Angle as an intern producer for over a year and a half before transitioning to the part-time staff at 16, becoming the youngest person to be promoted to part-time staff to date. Now attending college at New York University Tisch, Destiny is incredibly excited to continue teaching and giving back with Wide Angle virtually, using the insights she's learned to help the next generation.

Wide Angle was my birthplace as a filmmaker, and for that reason I will always consider it one of my homes as an artist. After almost four years, I chose to transition from apprenticeship to teaching because I wanted to continue pouring into youth the way that WAYM poured into me. One of the greatest joys is to watch a student progress on their path as an artist.

I hope that students feel empowered to take the tools given to them through our class and to apply them to other parts of their life. Through virtual event planning, students will be playing active roles in decision-making and creation. By taking a leadership role in class, I hope this will encourage students to rise up in other aspects of their life.

By teaching students how to tell their own stories the way they want to be told, while on a small scale, I am dismantling unjust, systemic policies bit by bit. The filmmaking business today is predominantly male-dominated and historically exclusionary when it comes representation of minorities on film. By working at Wide Angle, I'm engaging the next generation of filmmakers in important work that will help them develop who they are as an artist and how they plan on using their art to create the change they want to see in the world.

What made me fall in love with the creative process was being an artist myself and being taught by fellow artists who had a love for creativity as much as I did. There's nothing like being in a space (whether virtual or in-person) that is filled with passionate artists, because the possibilities for creation become endless. I aim to light the fire in youth that was lit in me at Wide Angle, by empowering students with the skills they need to produce the media they want to see.
