LEARN NEW MEDIA SKILLS THIS YEAR!

Engage your imagination, develop new skills, and connect with young media makers across the city.

Wide Angle offers flexible and fun media making workshops for middle and high school students. Our classes typically take place in person, but we're offering the same high quality experience through a combination of hybrid and remote instruction this year. Wide Angle’s programs offer opportunities to explore your creative side through various interactive activities led by skilled media instructors. Each workshop is developed to suit the academic and social-emotional needs of specific age groups, and to compliment group sessions with independent learning. Actor’s Workshop

Teacher: Destiny Brown

Tue/Thu, 5-7pm EST
Virtual Class

Acting is a skill useful to anyone as it can aid in public speaking, interviews, filmmaking, and social skills. Even if you’ve never considered yourself an actor before, in this workshop you will learn the beginning steps to feel confident in acting and creating your own artistic work. Having been an acting student myself for over 10 years, this workshop is fun, engaging, and most importantly BIPOC-friendly curriculum based off of what I felt was missing from what I learned as a student. The working actor nowadays is a multi-hyphenate artist, meaning it is important to learn more than just acting in order to have a sustainable career. Pulling from my own experiences, embedded in this workshop are tips on how to stay working in the business. Students will learn core skills necessary for an acting career, experience different roles in a production such as director and screenwriter, as well as feel equipped with what they will need to be competitive for performing arts college auditions.

Virtual Platforms: Zoom, WeVideo, Miro, Canva, Google Classroom

About Destiny: Destiny Brown is a filmmaker, actress, and teacher, born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She is a full-ride scholar and current junior at NYU Tisch majoring in Drama. As a teaching artist and producer with Wide Angle Youth Media, she has created multiple national and international award-winning films, traveled to South Africa to film internationally, and has spoken on numerous panels including the NAMLE international conference and Baltimore Homecoming. Destiny's greatest passions are ingrained in teaching and giving back, using the insights she's learned to help the next generation.

About Mace: I chose to work at Wide Angle Youth Media because I didn't have programs like Wide Angle that introduced me to media creation at a young age. I didn't discover my passion for video production and storytelling until I was a senior in high school. Finding my calling empowered me, it gave me purpose and a career path. Most importantly, it made me realize that I can share my voice through visual art and express myself, ultimately making an impact on and influencing others. I hope my students are introduced to new skills and that I'm able to equip them with creative tools to help them communicate their artistic voice.

FAQ’s

  • What is the difference between a "virtual" class and a "hybrid" class?
"Virtual" classes are conducted fully online. "Hybrid" classes include a virtual day and an in-person lab day.

Yes, to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff, educational programs would return to fully virtual engagement in certain situations (for example, if multiple students in one hybrid class had COVID-19 or if Baltimore City positivity rates go above 5% for more than 2 weeks). At the start of class, more details will be shared with students and parents/guardians.
