Wide Angle offers flexible and fun media making workshops for middle and high school students. Wide Angle’s programs offer opportunities to explore your creative side through various interactive activities led by skilled media instructors. Each workshop is developed to suit the academic and social-emotional needs of specific age groups, and to compliment group sessions with independent learning. We offer classes on various days to help you find a time and medium to cultivate your creative passions, regardless of your schedule.
AGES 10-14
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle school workshops help students in grades 6-8 explore their creative voice through a variety of new media and develop a deeper understanding of their community and their role within it.

Baltimore Speaks Out: Storytelling Media Sampling

In this course, students will explore four storytelling mediums: Video, Audio, Photography, and Illustration in order to create original artworks. Students who complete this course are eligible for service learning hours as required by Baltimore City Public Schools for graduation. You will recognize and define each medium; relate it to your own consumption, interests, and values; gain an understanding of the ways stories are told through media; compare various methods/tools used in these mediums and create original works.

About Darian: Darian Jones is a Baltimore filmmaker, currently pursuing his B.A. at the University of Baltimore, in Digital Communication with a focus in Media Design and Production. His passion for teaching youth is fueled by his desire to make a difference in their lives. As a graduate of the state official Arts2Work apprenticeship for Multimedia Production, he’s now a Journeyworker interested in documenting unique and authentic perspectives, filmmaking allows him to combine his love of storytelling and history. “I compare filmmaking to being a chef, I’m dealing with raw ingredients that I have to season, cook, and plate for audiences to digest.”
About Tia: Tia Thomas is an aspiring actress and alumni of Baltimore School for the Arts. She is currently attending Towson University as an acting major. She hopes that the work she creates in theatre will impact peoples lives along with inspiring them.
About Natalie: Natalie Thomas is a Baltimore native who has a passion for storytelling and film. Finishing with her B.A. at Morgan State University, she strives to give back to her community through the act of teaching something she loves, media. Natalie has a love for documentary filmmaking and hopes to bring the important and untold stories of Baltimore to the screen. She is now a freelance photographer and is very excited to start her journey here at Wide Angle.
About Aiara: Aiara Manning is one of the members of Wide Angle’s Design Apprentices team, having come up through the high school programming in the last year and a half. They have (in that time) worked with a broad scope of clients to make an impact on their local community in any way they can; be it through design, presentations, or even community outreach via canvassing at events around the city.

AGES 14-20
HIGH SCHOOL
High School workshops help students in grades 9-12 develop their artistic voice, creatively advance social justice causes through media, gain fluency in media literacy and build skills that will better prepare them for career and college. Students can expand their media portfolios, develop their leadership abilities and gain more experiences that will set them on their future pathways.
Classes meet twice a week for the academic year.

High school students who complete 75% of classes will earn a $300 stipend!

Hybrid (Virtual + In-Person) Class
In this course students will explore their interest in film by examining the history of filmmaking: different eras, genres, and methods of filmmaking. Students will learn the basics of filmmaking to operate DSLR cameras, editing software, lighting and audio equipment to create personal and group projects. In addition, this course will cover the five phases of filmmaking: Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production, Promotion, and Publishing.

The Actors Workshop

Virtual Class
The Actors Workshop is an opportunity for actors in all phases of the process, no matter how little or how much experience you have, to learn and grow from each other through acting! The workshop was created in response to the barriers put in place for individuals that come from marginalized communities to access the entertainment industry. Students learn skills for building a career in acting (building a website, creating a reel, audition technique, etc.), address and discuss issues in mainstream media, and learn improvisational skills through games and class exercises that free the body and mind.

About Destiny: Destiny Brown is a filmmaker, actress, and teacher, born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She is a full-ride scholar and current sophomore at NYU Tisch majoring in Drama. As a producer and teaching artist with Wide Angle Youth Media, she has created a national award-winning film, traveled to South Africa to film internationally, and has spoken on numerous panels including Light City and Grantmakers for Education. Destiny is incredibly passionate about teaching and giving back, using the insights she's learned to help the next generation.
Design

Design is an introductory course, focused on digital graphic design and project management. In honing their design skills, students will also develop the means to communicate perspectives through digital art projects.

FAQ’s
What is the difference between a "virtual" class and a "hybrid" class?
"Virtual" classes are conducted fully online. "Hybrid" classes include a virtual day and an in-person lab day.How will I access the software needed for the class?
Once enrolled, you will receive a Wide Angle email with a link to your Student Tool Kit for your virtual class or the virtual day of your hybrid class. This email will also include login instructions to access tools and software necessary for your course such as: Canvas, Zoom, and Google Drive.Does Wide Angle have safety protocols in place for COVID-19?
Yes, the safety of our students and staff is extremely important to us. Instructors and staff will follow COVID-19 safety precautions, based on CDC recommendations (social distancing, low class numbers, limited staff in the office, cleaning procedures before and after each class, and contract tracing as possible). Students who come to in person learning with a fever or other symptoms, or who were required to miss school due to potential COVID-19 exposure, will not be allowed to attend class in person that day. All students enrolled in programs and their parents/guardians will receive more detailed information at the start of the program.If COVID-19 gets worse, will Wide Angle continue to have classes in person?
To ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff, educational programs would return to fully virtual engagement in certain situations (for example, if multiple students in one hybrid class had COVID-19 or if Baltimore City positivity rates go above 5% for more than 2 weeks). At the start of class, more details will be shared with students and parents/guardians.How will I interact with classmates?
For virtual engagement, high school and BSO classes will be held via Zoom, where peer and instructor discussions and critiques will be conducted.Students in "hybrid" classes will meet once a week and participate via Zoom once a week.
Will I be on zoom the entire time?
Class format and “Zoom time” will be structured to accommodate the needs of each class; however, each class will include both group structured time and independent assignments for the virtual day.I’m not sure if this class is for me. How can I talk to someone?

Priority is given to Baltimore City residents or students who attend a BCPS school, as well as current students. If there is additional space, new students who reside outside of the city will be considered.How much does this program cost?
All Wide Angle programs are free!Do I receive service learning hours or compensation for my time?
Baltimore City high school students can choose to receive up to 25 service learning hours or earn a completion stipend, both for the academic year.Baltimore City BSO students are eligible to earn up to 6 service learning hours in each 8 week program, based on program attendance.

Wide Angle Youth Media prioritizes programming for youth who live in Baltimore City and/or who attend schools in Baltimore City. When resources permit, Wide Angle Youth Media accepts students from other Maryland counties to enroll in programming if space permits, however supporting stipends or service learning needs of youth in other counties is determined annually based on meeting fundraising goals.
