BEHIND THE SCENES: ONE LOVE VIDEO

Wide Angle student Oona pitching her video concept to One Love Foundations's CEO, Katie Hood, and One Love's Baltimore Executive Director Ojeda Hall and their team from NY.

One Love Foundation is a national organization that educates young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships, helping them to identify and avoid abuse and learn how to love better. One Love was founded in honor of Yeardley Love: A young woman who tragically lost her life at 22. Her death was completely preventable. Their mission is to make sure that it doesn’t happen to others.

Last spring, One Love approached Wide Angle about developing diverse narratives showing healthy and unhealthy relationships. Five Wide Angle high school students generated five separate video pitches and presented them to One Love’s top executives. One Love selected two, with one advancing to production in the fall. Students gained invaluable skills related to client projects, including project management and pitching ideas.

“Our classes are student-directed and we use a hybrid of design thinking and scrum to take student’s concepts from ideation to completion. Once students have come up with an idea, we work on the first phases of design thinking — empathy, ideation, and defining. After honing in about our client’s needs, we move into ideation. We use scrum methodologies of intense self-reflection , prioritization , and problem-solving to create quick prototypes of scripts to share with our client. This process allows students to practice breaking projects into small chunks, prioritizing tasks, time management, collaboration, and an iterative creative process. We also threw time for college admissions preparation, deep breathing, meditation, daily personal reflection,  journaling into the mix.”
